Website Design in Cheltenham supports Safer Internet Day 2016
The UK Safer Internet Centre is coordinated by a partnership of three leading organisations; Childnet International, the South West Grid for Learning and the Internet Watch Foundation. It is co-funded by the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme and is one of the 31 Safer Internet Centres of the Insafe network. The centre has three main functions: an Awareness Centre, a Helpline and a Hotline.
The UK Safer Internet Centre, and its partners, delivers a wide range of activity to promote the safe and responsible use of technology:
- founded and operates an award-winning esafety helpline for professionals working with children in the UK;
- operates the UK’s hotline for reporting online criminal content;
- coordinates Safer Internet Day in the UK, which provided over 69 million opportunities to see or hear the Safer Internet Day message in 2014, with over 650 supporters getting involved, and collectively reaching 25% of UK children, 18% of teens and 10% of parents.
- develops new educational and awareness raising resources for children, parents and carers and teachers to meet emerging trends in the fast-changing online environment. Recent launches include resources focusing on early years, sexting, and 'how to' video guides on using parental controls on internet-connected devices;
- develops self-assessment tools for schools and other settings to evaluate their esafety provision, including policy development;
- delivers education sessions for children, parents, carers and teachers in schools and other settings, reaching thousands every year;
- hosts the UKCCIS Evidence Group’s Research Highlight series, which summarises key academic publications on children and the internet;
- shapes policy at school, industry and government level, both in the UK and internationally;
- facilitates youth panels to give young people a voice on these issues;
- contributes to and commission academic research into children’s media use;
- works in partnership with others in the UK and globally - the Centre's resources are used in many countries worldwide;
- continues to develop the UK Safer Internet Centre website as a hub for information and advice, to reflect the range of work taking place across the UK.
